How Georgia licenses HVAC work

HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.

Who licenses: Georgia State Board of Conditioned Air Contractors (State Construction Industry Licensing Board, Secretary of State)

License types: Conditioned Air Contractor Class I (restricted), Conditioned Air Contractor Class II (unrestricted).

Companies: Georgia requires a state conditioned air contractor license (O.C.G.A. Title 43, Chapter 14) to perform conditioned air contracting, and the board says you may not perform services until you hold an active license. Under Board rules (Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. ch. 121), Class I is restricted to systems not exceeding 175,000 BTU of heating and 60,000 BTU of cooling and Class II is unrestricted.

Local rules: Local business license and permit rules were not confirmed here.

Check a license: goals.sos.ga.gov

Search the contractor on the Secretary of State's GOALS licensee search and confirm an active Conditioned Air Class I or Class II license that covers the size of system being installed.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
