How South Carolina licenses HVAC work

HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.

Who licenses: South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR): Contractor's Licensing Board (commercial) and Residential Builders Commission (residential HVAC)

License types: Mechanical Contractor: Air Conditioning, Mechanical Contractor: Heating, Mechanical Contractor: Refrigeration, Residential HVAC Installer and Repairer License (RBH).

Companies: Under S.C. Code 40-11-30 a person may not perform or offer mechanical contracting (which includes heating and air conditioning) above $10,000 without a Contractor's Licensing Board license, and residential HVAC work above $500 requires the Residential HVAC Installer and Repairer License from the Residential Builders Commission (S.C. Code Title 40, Chapter 59).

Local rules: Residential HVAC licensees are searched separately at https://verify.llronline.com/LicLookup/Resbu/Resbu.aspx?div=46.

For home HVAC work check the Residential Builders lookup, and for commercial work or larger jobs check the Contractor's Licensing Board lookup, before signing.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
