How Tennessee licenses HVAC work

Licensing is split between the state and local governments.

Who licenses: Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors, Department of Commerce and Insurance

License types: CMC-C (HVAC, Refrigeration and Gas Piping; Solar HVAC (Geothermal)), CMC (Full mechanical contracting classification).

Companies: Under Tenn. Code Ann. Title 62, Chapter 6, contractors on projects of $25,000 or more, including mechanical and HVAC work, must hold a Board-issued contractor license with the matching classification (CMC-C covers HVAC and refrigeration).

Local rules: Most HVAC projects under $25,000 are regulated locally, and cities and counties may issue their own mechanical or journeyman HVAC licenses (some counties also require a Home Improvement license).

Check a license: search.cloud.commerce.tn.gov

Search the company on the state license lookup for jobs of $25,000 or more, and for smaller jobs call your city or county codes office to learn what local HVAC license applies.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
