How Alabama licenses HVAC work

HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.

Who licenses: Alabama Board of Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Contractors

License types: Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor License, Refrigeration Contractor License.

Companies: Anyone who installs, services or repairs heating or air conditioning equipment, or commercial refrigeration equipment, must be certified by the Board under the Alabama heating, air conditioning and refrigeration contractor law (Code of Ala. 1975, Title 34, Chapter 31) and Board rules (Ala. Admin. Code ch. 440-X-3). Building owners working on their own property and regular maintenance employees working on their employer's premises are exempt.

Local rules: Board rules refer to local licenses and permits that contractors buy from cities and counties in addition to the state certification, so a local business license or permit may also apply.

Search the company or its qualifying individual on the Board's license lookup and confirm the certification is active and covers heating/air conditioning (or refrigeration) before signing.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
