How Florida licenses HVAC work

HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.

Who licenses: Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB)

License types: Air-Conditioning Contractor Class A, Air-Conditioning Contractor Class B, Air-Conditioning Contractor Class C, Mechanical Contractor, Sheet Metal Contractor.

Companies: Under Fla. Stat. 489.113(2) a person must be certified or registered to engage in the business of contracting in Florida. Section 489.105(3) defines Class A air-conditioning contractors as unlimited, Class B as limited to 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 Btu of heating per system, and Class C as limited to servicing air-conditioning, heating or refrigeration systems.

Local rules: The CILB page lists both certified (CA) and registered (RA) air-conditioning categories; how registered contractors are tied to local jurisdictions was not confirmed here.

Search the company on MyFloridaLicense and confirm the license class (A, B or C) fits the job, the status is current and active, and check for any disciplinary history.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
