How Arkansas licenses HVAC work
HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.
Who licenses: Arkansas HVACR Licensing Board, Arkansas Department of Labor and Licensing
License types: Class A, Class B, Class D, Class E, Class L.
Companies: Under Ark. Code 17-33-301 it is unlawful to do HVACR work without the appropriate license or registration unless exempt under 17-33-102. Class A has no size limits, Class B is limited to systems up to 25 tons cooling or 1,000,000 BTUH heating, Class D is ductwork only, Class E is refrigeration only, and Class L is a restricted lifetime license (Ark. Code 17-33-303).
Check a license: labor.arkansas.gov
Search the company on the state HVAC/R roster and confirm the license class fits the size and type of system being installed.
Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.
Sources: labor.arkansas.gov, labor.arkansas.gov, labor.arkansas.gov. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.
Before you hire
Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
