How Louisiana licenses HVAC work

HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.

Who licenses: Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC)

License types: Commercial License (Mechanical classification: Heat, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, Duct Work, and Refrigeration).

Companies: A contractor must hold an LSLBC Commercial License in the Mechanical classification (subclassification Heat, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, Duct Work, and Refrigeration) when an air conditioning, refrigeration or heating job costs more than $10,000 including labor and materials, under R.S. 37:2150.1 et seq. (the Contractors Licensing Law). Smaller jobs fall below the state threshold, and the LSLBC pages we read do not say whether any other state license applies to them.

Local rules: Local building permit officials must see proof of the applicant's LSLBC license before issuing a permit (R.S. 37:2160), and licensed mechanical contractors are excluded from local examination (R.S. 37:2156.1); We did not verify rules for jobs under $10,000.

Check a license: arlspublic.lslbc.louisiana.gov

Look the company up on the LSLBC license search and confirm it holds a Commercial license with the Mechanical classification before agreeing to work over $10,000.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
