How Maryland licenses HVAC work

HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.

Who licenses: Maryland State Board of Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) Contractors (Dept. of Labor, Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing)

License types: Master License, Master Restricted License, Limited License, Journeyman License, Journeyman Restricted License, Apprentice License.

Companies: Under Business Regulation Article 9A-301, an individual must be licensed by the Board before providing or assisting in providing heating, ventilation, air-conditioning or refrigeration services in Maryland. Contracting businesses work under a Master (all HVACR areas), Master Restricted (selected areas) or Limited (maintenance and repair only) license.

Check a license: dllr.state.md.us

Search the company's license on the Board's license search and make sure the license class (Master, Master Restricted or Limited) matches the work you are hiring them to do.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
