How Delaware licenses HVAC work
HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.
License types: Master HVACR Licensee, Master HVACR Restricted Licensee.
Companies: Under 24 Del. C. 1820(a) a person may not provide HVACR or HVACR restricted services in Delaware unless licensed as a master HVACR licensee or master HVACR restricted licensee. Exemptions include apprentices and mechanics working under a master licensee and homeowners working on their own residence (not for sale or rent, and not gas piping).
Check a license: delpros.delaware.gov
Verify the master HVACR license on the state's DELPROS lookup and note that a restricted license limits the holder to one specialty such as air conditioning or forced-air heating.
Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

Before you hire
Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
