HVAC licenses in Montana
Licensing is split between the state and local governments.
Who licenses: Montana Department of Labor & Industry, Business Standards Division (Construction Contractor License program)
License types: Construction Contractor License.
Companies: Montana has a general Construction Contractor License rather than an HVAC-specific one: under MCA 37-45-201 a person or business may not engage in business as a construction contractor without a current license, and the department's page says the new licensing program took effect January 1, 2026. MCA 37-45-104 exempts, among others, contractors with no employees and projects under $2,500, and licensed electricians and plumbers working within their scope.
Local rules: We found no Montana HVAC-specific contractor license on the official pages we read (the state boards list covers plumbers and electricians but no HVAC board), and we did not check city or county permit rules.
Check a license: ebizws.mt.gov
Search the company on the state license lookup to confirm a current Construction Contractor License, and ask your city or county building department what HVAC permit is needed.
Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.
We could not confirm every detail from Montana’s own sources, so treat this as a starting point and check with the agency.
Sources: boards.bsd.dli.mt.gov, boards.bsd.dli.mt.gov, mca.legmt.gov, mca.legmt.gov. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.
Questions to ask
Ask every company the same questions: license number, insurance, EPA refrigerant certification, a written itemized estimate, a load calculation for new equipment, after-hours rates, who pulls the permit, and the warranty. All eight questions.
Seasonal care
Getting through a Billings winter
Heating season is the long one in Billings, so the furnace, boiler or heat pump does most of the work. Start with these before the first cold snap – and keep carbon monoxide alarms working.
