HVAC licenses in Kentucky
HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.
Who licenses: Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (Division of HVAC)
License types: Master HVAC Contractor, Journeyman HVAC Mechanic, HVAC Apprentice Registration.
Companies: A company or individual must hold a Master HVAC Contractor license to advertise or practice HVAC contracting (installation, maintenance, alteration, remodeling or repair of heating, ventilation, hydronic, burner-service or cooling systems) under KRS 198B.650-198B.689 and 815 KAR 8:010. KRS 198B.674 exempts a few groups, such as homeowners working on their own occupied property and full-time maintenance staff doing routine maintenance.
Local rules: The state also runs HVAC permits and inspections for new installations, and its HVAC permitting page says 17 local programs hold their own HVAC jurisdiction, so permits may go through the local authority instead.
Check a license: dhbc.ky.gov
Search the contractor's name on the state license search (choose Division of HVAC, license type Master HVAC Contractor) and confirm the license is active before signing.
Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.
Sources: apps.legislature.ky.gov, apps.legislature.ky.gov, apps.legislature.ky.gov, dhbc.ky.gov. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.
HVAC licenses in Indiana
There is no statewide HVAC contractor license that we could find; cities or counties license HVAC work.
Local rules: The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency's list of licensed professions includes plumbing but shows no HVAC, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration or mechanical contractor category, so we could not find a statewide HVAC contractor license and we believe any licensing is set by individual cities and counties. We could not read the Indianapolis, Evansville or Fort Wayne licensing pages (the city sites returned no usable content or blocked access), so we could not confirm any specific local HVAC license, its name, or its requirements.
Call your city or county building department and ask whether HVAC contractors must be licensed or registered locally and whether a permit is required, then ask the contractor for that local license or registration number and confirm it with the department.
Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.
We could not confirm every detail from Indiana’s own sources, so treat this as a starting point and check with the agency.

Questions to ask
Ask every company the same questions: license number, insurance, EPA refrigerant certification, a written itemized estimate, a load calculation for new equipment, after-hours rates, who pulls the permit, and the warranty. All eight questions.
Seasonal care
Year-round care in Louisville
Louisville homes lean on both heating and cooling, so each system needs a check before its season: cooling in spring, heating in fall.
