Local rules: We could not find a Kansas state agency that licenses HVAC contractors, but we also could not open an official state page that says so outright, so we treat HVAC licensing as local on a low-confidence basis. Johnson County Contractor Licensing issues a Class DM Mechanical/HVAC specialty contractor license, which lets the holder perform only HVAC, mechanical and refrigeration services; its requirements include a qualifying individual, proof of education or examination, general liability insurance, and workers' compensation insurance or a notarized waiver, and the county's page lists a $100 application fee plus $225 per license type. The county's contractor search is at cls.jocogov.org. We could not read which Johnson County cities require or accept this license, and we could not open the Wichita, Kansas City (Unified Government of Wyandotte County) or Overland Park licensing pages (they returned errors or throttling), so we could not confirm local HVAC license rules there.
Ask the contractor for the license issued by your city or county (in Johnson County, a Class DM Mechanical/HVAC license) and confirm it with the issuing office before signing.
