HVAC licenses in Alaska

HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.

Who licenses: Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing (Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development)

License types: Residential HVAC (RHVC), Unlimited HVAC/Sheet Metal (UHVCS), Unlimited Refrigeration (UR), Heating, Cooling and Process Piping (HCPP), Mechanical Systems Temperature Control (CNTL).

Companies: Alaska licenses the individual 'mechanical administrator' who supervises mechanical (HVAC, refrigeration, hydronic) work: AS 08.40.260(a) says a person may not act as a mechanical administrator without a license unless excluded under AS 08.40.390. The division also lists mechanical contractors among the contractor types that must hold an Alaska construction contractor registration (AS 08.18).

Local rules: AS 08.40.390 lists exclusions from mechanical administrator licensing (for example some work in small or remote communities and work for utilities and municipalities on their own systems); local permit rules were not confirmed.

Check a license: commerce.alaska.gov

Look up both the company's construction contractor registration and the mechanical administrator's license on the state search, and ask which administrator will supervise your job.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

Sources: commerce.alaska.gov, commerce.alaska.gov, commerce.alaska.gov, commerce.alaska.gov. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.

Questions to ask

Ask every company the same questions: license number, insurance, EPA refrigerant certification, a written itemized estimate, a load calculation for new equipment, after-hours rates, who pulls the permit, and the warranty. All eight questions.

Seasonal care

Getting through a Anchorage winter

Heating season is the long one in Anchorage, so the furnace, boiler or heat pump does most of the work. Start with these before the first cold snap – and keep carbon monoxide alarms working.
