Do HVAC contractors need a license in Nebraska?

How Nebraska licenses HVAC work

There is no statewide HVAC contractor license that we could find; cities or counties license HVAC work.

Local rules: We could not find a statewide HVAC or mechanical contractor license in Nebraska. What the state does have is the Contractor Registration Act (Neb. Rev. Stat. 48-2101 to 48-2117), run by the Nebraska Department of Labor: contractors and subcontractors who work on real property other than their own must register each year (the fee rises to $40 on August 1, 2026), and those with one or more employees must file a workers' compensation certificate. This is a registration, not a trade license; the Act says it is not the Legislature's intent to endorse the quality or performance of any contractor (48-2102), and people working on their own property or earning less than $5,000 a year from construction are not contractors under it (48-2104). Separately, the State Electrical Division offers special electrician licenses limited to air conditioning and refrigeration systems (with an HVAC specialty exam); under the State Electrical Board rules these license holders cannot do any wiring on the line side of the disconnect. Trade licensing for the HVAC work itself is set by cities. The City of Lincoln registers mechanical trades under Chapter 25 of the Lincoln Municipal Code: Mechanical Master Contractor ($350 a year), Inactive Master, Journeyman and Apprentice, plus a Refrigeration-Mechanical Master Contractor ($250 a year) and fireplace categories; new journeymen and master contractors must pass exams, masters need 8 hours and journeymen 4 hours of continuing education to renew, and contractors pulling permits must file a certificate of liability insurance naming the city as additional insured. Lincoln lets a homeowner pull a mechanical permit for the single-family home they live in. We could not read the City of Omaha licensing pages for mechanical or air conditioning contractors (the site returned access errors), so we could not confirm Omaha's license names or requirements, and rules in other Nebraska cities were not checked.

Check the company on the Nebraska Department of Labor contractor registration search (dol.nebraska.gov/conreg/Search), then ask for the mechanical license or registration issued by your city (in Lincoln, a Mechanical Master Contractor registration) and confirm it and the permit with your city's building department.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

We could not confirm every detail from Nebraska’s own sources, so treat this as a starting point and check with the agency.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
