How Colorado licenses HVAC work

There is no statewide HVAC contractor license that we could find; cities or counties license HVAC work.

Local rules: The state Division of Professions and Occupations lists plumbing and electrical programs but no HVAC or mechanical contractor program, so HVAC licensing is by city or county; Denver, for example, issues Heating and Ventilating Class A, Class B (residential only) and Heating, Ventilating, A/C (residential only) supervisor certificates, and we could not confirm a Denver contractor lookup page or the rules of other Colorado cities.

Ask the contractor for the license or supervisor certificate issued by your city or county building department and confirm it with that department, and check that a permit is pulled.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

We could not confirm every detail from Colorado’s own sources, so treat this as a starting point and check with the agency.

Sources: dpo.colorado.gov, dpo.colorado.gov, denvergov.org, denvergov.org. Checked October 2026 from official sources. This is not legal advice.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
