HVAC licenses in New Hampshire
Licensing is split between the state and local governments.
Who licenses: New Hampshire Office of Professional Licensure and Certification (OPLC), Mechanical Licensing Board
License types: Fuel Gas Fitter (fuel gas installation technician, fuel gas service technician, fuel gas piping installer, hearth system technician, domestic appliance technician), Fuel Gas Fitting Trainee, Oil Heating Technician (voluntary certification).
Companies: We could not find a statewide license for general HVAC or air conditioning contractors in New Hampshire. The state does license people who work on gas-fired equipment: under RSA 153:27-38 and Board rule Saf-Mec 102, fuel gas fitting (natural gas or propane piping, appliances and venting, including heating and water heating equipment) requires a fuel gas fitter license, with exemptions such as an owner doing fuel gas fitting in their own owner-occupied single-family home (RSA 153:36). Certification for oil heating technicians is voluntary under RSA 153:16-b. RSA 153:36 also exempts work connected with installing heating, cooling, air conditioning or domestic water heating systems from the plumber licensing requirement. We did not find an official page stating that no HVAC license exists, so this describes only what the statutes and rules we read cover.
Local rules: We did not find any city or town HVAC contractor licensing program in New Hampshire; local building permits may still apply and we did not research them. The OPLC pages themselves returned access errors to our fetch tool, so Board scope was read from the statutes and administrative rules on the General Court website.
Check a license: oplc.nh.gov
For gas furnaces, boilers or water heaters, ask for the technician's New Hampshire fuel gas fitter license and look it up on the OPLC license lookup; for cooling-only or oil work, ask what training or certification the technician holds and whether a local permit is needed.
Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.
We could not confirm every detail from New Hampshire’s own sources, so treat this as a starting point and check with the agency.

Questions to ask
Ask every company the same questions: license number, insurance, EPA refrigerant certification, a written itemized estimate, a load calculation for new equipment, after-hours rates, who pulls the permit, and the warranty. All eight questions.
Seasonal care
Getting through a Manchester winter
Heating season is the long one in Manchester, so the furnace, boiler or heat pump does most of the work. Start with these before the first cold snap – and keep carbon monoxide alarms working.
