How Michigan licenses HVAC work
HVAC contractors are licensed by the state.
Who licenses: Michigan Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Bureau of Construction Codes
License types: Mechanical Contractor License (classifications: Hydronic heating and cooling and process piping; HVAC equipment; Ductwork; Refrigeration; Limited heating service; Unlimited heating service; Limited refrigeration and air conditioning service; Unlimited refrigeration and air conditioning service; Fire suppression; Specialty).
Companies: Under the Skilled Trades Regulation Act (2016 PA 407), MCL 339.5809, a person may not perform installations, alterations or servicing of the listed mechanical work classifications without a mechanical contractor's license from LARA. The statute carves out a few exceptions, such as unpaid charitable work on 1-4 family homes.
Local rules: Michigan law (MCL 339.5811) bars municipalities from setting their own licensing requirements for these mechanical classifications, though local permits and inspections still apply.
Check a license: michigan.gov
Verify the company's Mechanical Contractor License and its classifications on the state license search before work begins.
Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

Before you hire
Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
