Do HVAC contractors need a license in Illinois?
How Illinois licenses HVAC work
There is no statewide HVAC contractor license that we could find; cities or counties license HVAC work.
Local rules: We could not find a statewide HVAC or mechanical contractor license in Illinois: the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation's list of regulated professions does list trades such as roofing contractors but shows no heating, air conditioning or refrigeration contractor category. Licensing appears to be set by individual cities. The City of Springfield issues residential and commercial mechanical licenses (five years of experience for residential, seven for commercial, plus the ICC Master Mechanical exam, under Springfield Mechanical Ordinance Chapter 173); its mechanical contractor registration also needs a $5,000 surety bond in favor of the city. Chicago Municipal Code section 4-4-322 lets the Commissioner of Buildings suspend or revoke the license, registration or certification of a person providing construction services relating to heat, ventilation, air conditioning or refrigeration systems, which indicates Chicago has such a credential, but we could not open the Chicago Department of Buildings licensing pages (access was blocked) and so could not confirm the license names or requirements. Rules in other Illinois cities and counties were not checked.
Ask the contractor for the mechanical or HVAC license issued by your city or village (or county, if you are unincorporated), confirm it with that building department, and check that the permit is pulled in the contractor's name.
Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.
We could not confirm every detail from Illinois’s own sources, so treat this as a starting point and check with the agency.

Before you hire
Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
