How Maine licenses HVAC work

Licensing is split between the state and local governments.

Who licenses: Maine Fuel Board (Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation, Dept. of Professional and Financial Regulation)

License types: Master Oil Burner and/or Solid Fuel Technician, Journeyman Oil Burner and/or Solid Fuel Technician, Apprentice Oil Burner and/or Solid Fuel Technician, Propane and Natural Gas Technician, Propane and Natural Gas Helper, Limited Wood Pellet Technician, Limited Tank Installer.

Companies: Under 32 MRSA 18102, a person who installs or services oil, propane, natural gas or solid-fuel burning equipment (including pellet-fired central heating appliances) must be licensed by the Maine Fuel Board. The Board's pages and chapter 139 say nothing about licensing for air conditioning, heat pumps or general HVAC.

Local rules: Maine has no statewide general HVAC or air-conditioning contractor license that we could confirm on the official pages we read; the state license covers fuel-burning heating equipment only, and we did not check municipal permit rules.

Check a license: pfr.maine.gov

For furnace, boiler or fuel-burner work, verify the technician on the Maine Fuel Board license lookup; for air conditioning or heat pump work, ask the company about its insurance and any local permit instead.

Federal rule: in every state, technicians who handle refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification, whatever the state or city requires.

We could not confirm every detail from Maine’s own sources, so treat this as a starting point and check with the agency.

Before you hire

Ask for the license number and check it on the official lookup where one exists. Ask for proof of insurance and a written, itemized estimate, and ask who pulls the permit if the job needs one – a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner usually does.
